We wanted to share about a beautiful exterior remodel in Boise’s historic district, this time with a special focus on the backyard and entertaining spaces.

The homeowners loved to host gatherings but felt limited by the existing layout of their home and backyard. Because the home’s backyard didn’t directly face the street, we had more flexibility to make meaningful updates without running into restrictions from the historic district — which allowed us to get creative while still respecting the home’s charm.

One highlight of the project was adding a mini bathroom connected to the garage, complete with a toilet and sink. This made it much more convenient for guests during parties or for the owner when gardening. We also upgraded the patio area and rebuilt a beautiful brick fence — carefully deconstructed during construction to access the backyard and then rebuilt to look just as it did before.

Interestingly, while working on the backyard, we uncovered an old swimming pool that had been buried decades ago. To move forward, we demoed the pool and re-graded the area to create a more functional, level space. This was a great example of the unknown surprises that can surface during a remodel, and why it is always important to have excess budget and timeline built-in before beginning, just in case.

Inside the home, we addressed significant structural challenges tied to its historic construction, including working with the brick and ensuring the new finishes complemented the existing architecture. The finished backyard now features a large patio cover, updated hardscaping, and a water feature that brings everything together.

This project shows what’s possible when you blend thoughtful design, respect for history, and the desire to create a welcoming space for friends and family.
